Artist Statement
The Waldorf method of teaching art begins with guiding the youngest students to experience the simple motion of colors flowing across the page. From this initial connection with color and fluidity, imagination is added and an image develops. Natural subjects are emphasized, and art is integrated into the curriculum through the study of botany, geography, and animal studies. In middle school, students are trained in observational drawing and color theory, allowing them to create vibrant representational images that still retain the imaginative and explorative qualities of the early years.
A Waldorf Education is unique in so many ways. It honors the developmental stages of the child and nurtures not just the body and mind of each student, but also their spirit. An appreciation of the natural world is emphasized, and education begins with observing one’s environment and learning basic truths—that water flows, the moon rises and sets, and that blue and yellow make green. Visual art and music are integrated into each day’s lessons, as are games and movement. Children love their learning journey at Waldorf School, as is evident in the joy seen in their artistic expression.
