Artist Statement
The Waldorf method of teaching art begins with images of nature and allows the
youngest students to experience the simple motion of colors flowing across the
page. Watercolor is used primarily in the early grades as it brings the colors to
life and helps focus on the grand picture instead of the details. In the middle
grades, pastels are introduced, especially as students study the ancient
civilizations of Persia, Egypt, and Greece. In junior high, students paint nature
from observation and expand into other media such as collage and charcoal. Art
lessons always relate back to the academic studies of each grade and thus
support and enhance the learning process.
A Waldorf Education is unique in so many ways. It honors the developmental
stages of the child and nurtures not just the body and mind of each student, but
also their spirit. An appreciation of the natural world is emphasized, and
education begins with observing one’s environment and learning about basic
truths- that water flows, the moon rises and sets, and that blue and yellow make
green. Visual art and music are integrated into every day’s lessons, as are games
and movement. Children love their learning journey at Waldorf School, as is
evident in the joy seen here in their artistic expression.
