Tina Johnston, originally from Chicago, has lived in the Albany, NY area for 45 years. A co-leader of the Schenectady Art Society, she has exhibited at Cobleskill’s 88th National Exhibition, Pruyn House, The Stockade, Spencertown and other venues. Retiring from teaching High School Nutrition and Family classes in 2014 allowed her to spend much more time on her art. She took her first night class in art at Guilderland HS in 1992 and took a watercolor class in New Zealand in 1994. Recently, she expanded from watercolorist to fabric artist, still using water technique but now with dyes on silk. She finds the luminosity of silk mesmerizing and the capricious movement of liquid dyes infectious. Her goal is to provide visual serenity using gentle lines and melting colors.
The poem, “Over in the Meadow” by Katherine Floyd Dana inspired her to paint an image for each stanza. Displayed are the 10 paintings with accompanying text from the poem. Also here are 5 paintings from Tina’s “Painted Forward series presenting past artists’ work reimagined with the figures holding cell phones or iPad.
