Artist Statement
Some days I meet a canvas and I have nothing to say. Other times I am away from the studio,
the canvas, and wish I could paint at that very moment. Inspiration does not always correlate
with when I am standing in front of a canvas. My painting is driven by organic impulse and I
often work on multiple paintings at once. There was a time when I kept them apart from each
other; but now I prefer to have them in conversation – they may or may not be joined by
themes, patterns, color schemes.
For years my artistic practice stayed safely within the confines of realism. But as I began to trust
my head and my heart, the brush in my hand discovered the joy of loose and abstract color.
Now my art is often infused with realistic imagery. The process allows me to access a deeper,
more fulfilling sense of playfulness and self expression, while navigating the terror of being
human.
I have been feeling the weight of climate change and finding my place in the grander scheme of
things. War, genocide, and famine- all far off concepts- are delicately entwined into my
existence. With my brush as my guide, I access the wet and heavy places of our changing,
warming, yet endlessly beautiful planet.
I strive to reduce the noise in my head about coherence in my work. I maintain a sense of
brightness; creating a response to the beige around me, celebrating the vibrance of life. Nature
and quiet places are endlessly remarkable and influential to me. I hope my work lights up your
heart and connects you to the magic of being in community with a magnificent world!
