August Printmaking Studio Open Studio Cost (1 Aug 2026)

We offer open studio access to individual community members to come utilize the space to work on individual projects and grow their art practice!

Our space is an environmentally friendly studio that facilitates people of all experience levels as a place of experimentation and discovery of the magic of printmaking.

Please read the guidelines linked here and sign a release of liability below to use the printmaking studio on your own.

Community members looking to use this space must demonstrate that they have experienced with one or more printmaking mediums and attend an orientation. Studio orientations are hosted once a month or you can schedule an individual appointment. Feel free to reach out to Ally DeRusso at aderusso@saratoga-arts.org to schedule a one-on-one orientation.

Community members without experience in printmaking are asked to attend Saratoga Arts classes or workshops to learn one or more printmaking processes. Upon completion of classes individuals may attend an orientation and purchase open studio access time.

Saratoga Arts provides a variety inks, equipment, tools, cleaning supplies, newsprint, and other basic shared supplies. Studio users must supply their own printing paper, plates/blocks, etching needles, scrapers/burnishers, carving tools, etc. Purchasing studio access helps us cover cost of consumable goods like newsprint, inks, cleanings supplies, and maintenance of the shop. You can purchase time through this form and schedule time using our booking system here or at saratoga-arts.org/Printmaking-Studio

Kitchen Lithography

Get lithographic quality images with common household materials! In this class, we will use aluminum foil as our plate and draw with oil based crayons to create an image. The image will be etched into the foil using Coca Cola. Then we'll roll ink on to be able make multiple copies of your image. With this process you can take what you've learned home with you to continue creating prints.

All materials and tools will be provided for the class.

About Erin Lobb Mason:

Erin Lobb Mason is a printmaker and musician from Kentucky, currently based in upstate New York. Her work is grounded in a strong sense of place and draws inspiration from the natural world, grief, and queer identity.

Since 2020 Erin has been working with printmakers and activists at AS220 Industries and throughout the community to share skills for self expression and resistance in print. She leads workshops throughout the northeast and is driven by a desire to share the community building and collaborative spirit of printmaking.

Intermediate Woodcut Relief Printmaking

Woodcut is the oldest form of relief printmaking. In this 3 session class, you will learn the steps of creating a woodcut, including transferring an image to a block, various approaches to carving, and producing a series of prints. By the end of the class you'll have the skills and knowledge to know what materials to buy, how to print, and carve, so you can continue creating on your own.

You will have the option to advance your skills by working at a larger scale of 9 x 12 inches or making a multi-color image with multiple blocks at 4 x 6 inches.

All materials and tools will be provided for the class.

Multi session printmaking classes gives you open studio access for the duration of the class. Expand your project, dive deeper into the process, and make more prints by coming in for extra time outside of class!

Introduction to Screenprinting

Learn the basics of screenprinting! We learn how to create designs by drawing on mylar, paper stencils, screen filler, and photographic imagery. You will learn how to pull a print, how to mix ink, and register each layer.

You'll have the opportunity to create multiple single color images or create a multi layered print. We'll work with an 8 x 10 image size. Feel free to bring a few sketches, ideas, or reference images to the first class.

Multi-session printmaking classes include access to the studio outside of class hours for the duration of the class. Allowing students to dive deeper into the process, and create more prints.

All materials and tools will be provided for the class.

How many ways can we layer color, shape, texture, and line by inking a smooth printing plate? We will experiment with stencils, textures, and mark- making tools to create unique hand pulled prints using the etching press. While this is a perfect class for anyone new to printmaking to learn the basics, it will also provide a wide breadth of possibilities for those already familiar with printmaking. When we work in a group setting the creative sparks fly and we all become energized to try out new ideas and fresh approaches. Open studio time between sessions will allow for a deep exploration.

Using techniques of intaglio and collagraph we will transform recycled food containers in to sustainable printing plates. Incise, carve, peel away the shiny lining, add collage elements then apply ink, wipe the plate and transfer the image to damp paper using the etching press. The packaging will provide unique marks of its own to enhance our imagery, and plates can be cut to any shape so creating assemblage compositions can be explored . This simple process can yield rich results and can create unique editions from each plate. Take advantage of Open Studio time between classes to create a large collection of prints.

Introduction to Copper Plate Etching

In this class, you will learn about working with a copper plate to translate your drawings into a printable matrix. Etching is a printmaking technique where an image is created by incising into a plate. The ink is held in the recessed areas of the plate by carding on ink and wiping off the excess.

You will be guided through the whole etching process, from polishing your plate, and etching your final design in the acid bath. Then you'll learn the whole printing process including, how to use an etching press, inking and wiping your plate, and dampening and drying your paper. You will leave with a few prints of your image!

You'll get two 6 x 4 inch etching plates to create two different images.

As part of multi-session printmaking classes, you have open access to the printmaking studio outside of class hours, for the duration of your class!

No experience necessary! All levels are welcome.

All materials and tools will be provided for the class.

After taking a printmaking class, you have the opportunity to sign up for open studio time to work on your own projects!
