Saratoga Arts and the New York Foundation for the Arts will present a staged reading of Brooklyn-based playwright Young Jean Lee's screenplay The Artist Colony on Saturday, August 21, at 8pm at The Arts Center, 320 Broadway, Saratoga Springs. The event is free and open to the public.

The Artist Colony is a screenplay for a satirical horror-film/comedy set at a haunted artist colony. The story follows the story of Eleanor, a married painter who goes to an eccentric, haunted artist colony and encounters a number of temptations, including but not limited to: marital infidelity, procrastination, and selling her soul to the devil. Lee will present a reading of the script-in-progress cast with artists currently in residence at Yaddo, Saratoga's own artist colony.

Young Jean Lee has been called “a rising star” by the New York Times and “one of the best experimental playwrights in America” by Time Out New York. She has written and directed seven plays in New York and toured her work to over twenty cities around the world. She is currently under commission from Plan B/Paramount Pictures, Lincoln Center Theater, Playwrights Horizons, and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.

Lee's plays have been published in Three Plays by Young Jean Lee (Samuel French), Songs of the Dragons Flying to Heaven and Other Plays (TCG), and The Shipment/Lear (TCG). She has received numerous grants including funding from the NEA, Rockefeller Foundation, Creative Capital Foundation, and the Foundation for Contemporary Arts. Lee is a member of New Dramatists and 13P and has an MFA from Mac Wellman's playwriting program at Brooklyn College; she is the artistic director of Young Jean Lee’s Theater Company http://www.youngjeanlee.org and is a recipient of an OBIE Award and an Academy Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

Young Jean Lee is a 2010 Artist Fellowship recipient of the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA). This presentation is co-sponsored by Artists & Audiences Exchange, a NYFA public program, funded with leadership support from the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA).
